The story takes place during the World War II era, four siblings — Peter, Susan, Edmond, and Lucy are sent to live in the countryside.  While exploring the old house they're staying in, the youngest sister, Lucy, finds an enormous wardrobe.  She steps inside and finds herself in a strange, snowy forest.  She soon encounters a faun named Mr. Tumnus who is quite surprised to meet a human girl.  The faun proceeds to tell Lucy that she has entered the enchanted world of Narnia.  Mr. Tumnus explains that it is always winter there and never quite reaches Christmas. Narnia is under the spell of the evil White Witch.  Lucy returns to the house from the wardrobe and although she thinks she’s been gone for hours, she’s really only been gone a few minutes.  She tries to explain to her siblings about this other world, but they ridicule her story, especially her brother Edmond.

Sometime later, Edmond finds his way into Narnia, where he meets the White Witch.  Bribing him with his favorite treat, Turkish Delight, she’s strangely intrigued by the fact he has a brother and two sisters.  The White Witch convinces him to come back as soon as he can with his other siblings in tow.  Eventually, all the siblings make their way into Narnia.  Upon returning Lucy leads them to Mr. Tumnus’ home to find out that he’s been arrested on charges of treason.  She realizes that it was the White Witch who has captured him.  Lucy implores her siblings to help her rescue her friend.  The children meet some other characters along the way, such as Aslan the lion, who returns to Narnia to try and defeat the White Witch.
