Yesterday, a number of our 7th and 8th grade students participating in the Gifted Program were awarded 1st place in this year’s Future City competition!
Future City is an annual competition sponsored by Bentley, Shell, and a variety of other businesses. The competition requires students to design a city of the future following the year’s theme. This year’s theme was ‘a waste-free city,’ focusing on a circular economy. Students were challenged to find a way to accomplish the following three goals: 1) Design out waste and pollution. 2) Keep products and materials in use. 3) Regenerate natural systems. After winning the Regional-level competition in January, these students progressed to compete at the International-level in February.
Each team is evaluated on their model, research essay, presentation video, and Q&A sessions with several panels of judges. This team is made up of some of Mr. Smith’s 7th and 8th grade students. They’ve been working on this project for an entire year and are thrilled with the results.
Through this competition, students were able to imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future! This competition allows them to collaborate and exchange innovative ideas of how to build a better future for us all.
In addition to winning this year’s competition, the Warwick Middle School team also won the ‘Advancing Quality of Life for All’ award.
The Warwick Future City team has won two world championships and four top 5 finishes in six years.
